Lots of Goodies!

Besides the four bottles of stunning Merlot J & M opened a lot of other goodies for dinner. Always fun, always great, always heavy the day after... - thanks! :-)

1990 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett, Dr Loosen
A mature, open nose with notes of dried apricots, assorted nuts, band-aid and a whole petrol station. A bit over the hill.
The taste is mature, semi dry and medium long with notes of mature yellow apples, rubber, dried fruits and some overly mature flowers. Good acidity though. Holding up fairly well but this should have been drunk 10 years ago.

2003 Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett, Dönnhoff
A cool, elegant, fine nose with notes of dry lemoncello, yellow plums, cucumber, warm grass and lots of sweet minerals. A refined sweetness. Very good.
The taste is tight and intense with notes of ripe pears, sugared water, wet rocks and grassy notes. A very fine acidity. Pure. Very, very good.

2005 Oberhauser Hermannshöhle Riesling Trocken, Dönnhoff
S brought this as a blind tasting sample. A young, fresh and sprightly nose with notes of elderberries, lemon peel, grey pears and lots of minerals. Very pure.
The taste is tight, dry and intense with notes of unripe pears, lemon and lime peel, grass and crushed rocks. Medium long, salivating finish. Very fine.

1996 Pol Roger Cuvée Winston Chruchill
A deep, profound, perfectly mature nose with notes of white peaches, sage, christmas spices and blood oranges. Pure as new fallen snow. After some time in the glass there are notes of fudge and some smoke. Marvellous!
The taste is like drinking velvet, with soft bubbels and lovely notes of peach, pears and grapefruit. The finish goes on for over a minute. Great acidity. This is drinking perfect now and I can´t see it getting any better. Just beautiful.

2010 Abtserde, Keller
This is a stunner! The nose is deep, intoxicating and pure with notes of pear ice cream, gravel, assorted spices, a touch of smoke and lots of sweet minerals. Very deep and fine. Stunning potential.
The taste is lovingly pure, refined and tight with notes of white currants, grey pears, chalk and lime peel. A very long, energetic finish. Lip smacking acidity. Great stuff, but wait 5+ years before doing the deed.

2008 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly, Hubert Lamy
Aaaah, this is good - a deep, penetrating, concentrated nose with a beautiful smokiness covering the melon, sweet lemon and white currants scents. Very floral. There is some cookie dough notes after a while in the glass. Impressive!
The taste is young, tight and intense with notes of ripe pears, melon, grapefruit and some dry fudge. The finish is very long and complex. A very fine bitterness. This is just lovely.

2007 Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Spätlese Auction, Dönnhoff
While still a fine bottle of wine, this doesn´t shine as it did just a few months ago. It feels more backward, restrained and not as focused, although there a fine fruit, some smoky notes and a medium long, ripe finish. A good bottle but the previous one was superb.

1961 Barolo Riserva Speciale, M. Mascarello
Time now for two older gentlemen with some yummy risotto. The 1961 has a mature, round, sweet nose with notes of rosehips, undergrowth, hard cherry candy, autumn leaves and lots of mushrooms. Fully mature and maybe a tad much so.
The taste is round, mature and somewhat dry with notes of rosehips, dried cherries, dry chocolate and some balsamic notes. The finish is medium long. Goes very well with the risotto, but a tad dry on its own.

1967 Barolo Riserva Speciale Poderi Rochette, M. Mascarello
The younger sibling shows more vigour, with a nose full of raspberry licorice, cigarr box, forest floor, fresh mushrooms, rosehips and a bonfire in the distance. Very good. Caught in full maturity.
The taste is mature, tight and expressive with notes of chocolate covered cherries, dried mushrooms, autumn leaves, licorice and rose petals. A very fine acidity. Even better than the 61 with the risotto and very good on its own.

1977 Taylor´s Vintage Port
To end the evening after the flight of Merlot´s this perennial favourite was served. The nose is deep, sweet and fabolous with notes of pan roasted nuts, dried figs, candied orange peel, some mushroomy notes and a hint of detergent. This bottle feels very young, I have tasted more advanced, sweeter bottles than this.
The taste is broad, tight and steady with a lovely sweetness, massive tannins in the background and a gorgeous note of a yummy nut- and chocolate cake. Very concentrated. The finish goes on and on and on. This need more time in the cellar. Great wine in the making, if you have the patience...
