Vacation Wine Diary - Day 24 - 1959 Volnay, A. Bichot

Dear Diary

With a perfectly (well, as perfect you can manage when you´re not in your own kitchen...) roasted chicken, I was in a mood for a well aged Burgundy.

1959 Volnay, A. Bichot
As most old wines, it opens with a funky aroma that blows away with some air. It  then displays a deep, round, soft nose with notes of moist undergrowth, stale Cola, beetroot juice, old leather and molasses. Maybe on its last leg but it doesn't budge during the hours it takes to drain the decanter.
The taste is round, ripe and warm with notes of cooked root vegetables, dried raspberries, moist undergrowth and muscovado sugar. A fine dried up sweetness in the medium long finish. Excellent with the chicken. If you have any, drink them.
