In Search of Brunello di Montalcino´s Soul - Chapter XVIII

I really liked the 2001 Vigna di Pianrosso from Ciacci Piccolomini d´Aragona and was looking forward to tasting two more bottles from the 2001 vintage, which gets 4 stars from the Consorzio.
Judging from these three examples from the vintage, I would concur with the Consorzio in that 2001 is a very good vintage, that have started to hit its prime drinking phase.

2001 Brunello di Montalcino, Il Paradiso
A big, deep, somewhat mature nose with lots of sour/sweet cherries and notes of dried flowers, violet pastills, hard cherry candy and some old leather. Wit air it becomes very floral. Very, very good. Day two it is more mature with autumn leaves and cold coffee.
The taste is big and pure with a fine, sweet cherry fruit and additional notes of licorice, leather, dried flowers and warm tiles. The finish is long, warm and dry with a fine intensity. Day two it is tighter and dryer. I think this is fully mature and should be drunk over the next 5+ years. A fine wine.

2001 Brunello di Montalcino Val di Suga, Tenimenti Angelini
A beautiful, open, round nose with notes of ripe cherries, rose petals, licorice, violets and a summer Tuscan gravel road. Very deep and fine. It becomes deeper and darker with air, with a gorgeous chocolate covered cherries scent. Just lovely.
The taste is cool, fresh and intense with notes of red and black cherries, violets, licorice, rosemary and warm gravel. The tannins still delivers quite a punch. A long, warm, balanced finish. This has just hit its plateau and will stay there for 7+ years. This is really delicious!
